Default Free Photoshop alternative

I am looking to find a free Photoshop alternative. I don't care if it is Linux or Windows software. I found Paint.NET, but I would kind of like some software that either works on Windows 2000 or Linux. Is Paint.NET good enough? Does anyone know of a free Photoshop alternative? Thanks!

The GNU Image Manipulation Program (or GIMP) comes free on Ubuntu.

I've used GIMP quite a bit, but it just isn't anything near as good as Photoshop. Has anyone used Krita (comes with KOffice on KDE)? Thanks!

GIMP is free period, for any OS.

I don't like it and I'm new to picture manipulation stuff and it's not easy to use for beginners.

I like GIMP for basic stuff but when it comes to making stuff like wallpapers I have found that is not all that good for that sort of thing.
