Default Can I buy and external hard drive and change it to an internal one?

I've been looking for an internal hard drive for my laptop and have found the one I want... the only problem is that I've been looking everywhere for it and it is sold out. There IS an external hard drive that boasts the same drive, and I was wondering (I don't know if you'll need more specs to be able to dertermine this) if I would be able to buy the external drive and install the drive itself into my laptop? Thanks.
