Smile Create, use, and embed Subtitles into a video

This is not a question - just some info for anyone interested. I have been wanting to work more with subtitles and I just wanted to briefly pass on what I have found and learned. In this case, I wanted to create my own subtitles for a video, then embed them into the video so the viewers don't have to deal with extra subtitle files.

Note: leaving the video intact and using subtitle files is actually WAY better, but in this case, I wanted to "ruin" the video by permanently embedding the subtitles into it.

OK, so you need the following freeware programs:

SubCreator: http://www.radioactivepages.com/inde...ction=software
You only need this if you want to create the subtitles from scratch.

Subtitle Edit: http://www.nikse.dk/se/

VirtualDub: http://www.virtualdub.org/download
Subtitle filter for VirtualDub: http://www.virtualdub.org/virtualdub_filters
  • If you have a .srt or .smi or .sub file already, then convert it to .ssa using Subtitle Edit 1.8
Make sure that under Options-Settings-SSA Style, that the font size and color is something that you will later see well on the video. For example, a light yellow. Pure white might not work well later on in this particular project.

Now the rest is done using VirtualDub.
  1. Open the .avi or .mpg video file in VirtualDub.
  2. Go to Video-Filters and add the Subtitles filter -- Note: If you don't have it, then you need to download it from the VirtualDub website and extract it into the Plugins folder in the main VirtualDub directory.
  3. Add the .ssa file when prompted
  4. Now back at the main VirtualDub screen, you will see the before and after previews.
  5. Under Video-Compression, set your desired compression to encode the video.
  6. Now, File-Save .avi will encode the video.
I hope this helps someone out there.
