Default Screen Resolution Windows Problem

A neighbor of mine was having trouble seeing the screen and she was playing with screen options in the Control Panel. She said that she checked an option for a larger resolution then decided she didn't want it so she unchecked it.

Now when she boots up her computer the screen is HUGE! IT has "Turn off Family Computer" adn the shutdown button with that covers the center of the screen. The desktop does not come up, it has a Windows login screen type background to it. If she clicks on shutdown, it drings up a very large version of the window that prompts to either restat, standby, or shutdown the computer. If you select cancel it goes back to the other screen.

Has anyone ever encountered an error like this? Any solution ideas. I don't want to reformat her hard drive because she has lots of pictures that she wants. So that is the last option. Are there any programs that I could install on my laptop then connect my laptop to her computer to take her files in case we do need to reformat.

Thanks for the help.

That should be fixable without having to reformat.
What version of windows is it? XP, I assume?

When that initial HUGE window comes up, what happens if you just press enter?

I would think the goal is to get to the desktop so that you can check the display settings properties again. Try what Charly wrote to see if you can get to the desktop in safemode.

I would be curious to know what the resolution settings are and what the DPI settings are.

If nothing seems to work, I would try to go back to a restore point before you try to reinstall windows.

If worse comes to worse and you have to reformat and reinstall windows (which I doubt it) then let me know BEFORE you do that and I will help you recover her files before they are erased.
