Default drive options for safety and reliability

OK so i'm getting this new pc off ebay probably my biggest expense before my car. This Pc will be used for gaming, video productions, and almost evey daily activity known to man lol. The thing i'm paranoid about is data storage because at the end of the day even if you have the top if the line pc its useless if you have corrupt drives ,etc. I've been researching and i think i found my solution.

I dont know if it can actually work like this but let me have a stab at it
I can have a primary drive in my computer booting xp
I can have a removable SATA apparatus drive in one of my bays
I can use Partition Magic to duplicate drives.

OK so will the following work

Duplicating Primary ( when its at its optimal configuration) drive using the
drive bay (which apparatus do u suggest)
Booting from the drive bay removable drive (or primary drive)

The whole reason i want to do this is to have a main drive of xp to keep
stable and perfectly backedup (duplicate)
To have another drive that only boots vista (i would partition buts i find it
more efficient to have seperate drives)
Of course external for random files

All help is welcomed and any advice is highly appreciated

thank you

(oh yeah it would have to be hot swappable right?)
