Default computer newb--help

hello im new here ill start out, i own a Dell 6400 80gb and a HP pavillion 120gb id like to learn about computers a little more so maybe someone can help me here are the things i would like to know more about.

what does 512mb DDR mean? is it something new? i nver seen "DDR"

and i would like to know more about RAM and what it does

If anyone has links to comp terminology or any place i can read info and learn from it thanks, i would like to learn more about computers than just those 2 things so any other info would be appreciated, i would just like to know the general way a computer works
