Default internet email question - help

is there anywhere on the internet where i can send emails to people using random emails?

basically, a friend of mine has been getting emails from himself. its his email address sending him emails. he changed the password many times. i know its a joke from a friend but i want to figure this out b.cc its interesting.

like with mapquest you can email the directions to somebody and it asks for the email to send it to and the email to say it is from, so i can imagine the technology is out there. but where?!

telnet, or opening random email accounts and sending stuff to him.

also if he is getting mail by himself from someone he knows then he could be hacked. simply put, if you know a friends dob, and address, and favourite pets name or mothers maiden name then you can simply change the pswd and access their account easily. then the original user can recover his account by changing his password again. to be more secure ALSO change the random 'security' question every so often. Also be more cryptic, see i choose random questions and answer with my random number. works a treat.

there are downloadable clients that will let you put in a fake return address, but in the headers, it can still be tracked to where it was sent from. if these emails are coming from your friend's machine, then it's possible he was hacked, but more than likely, if it's just another friend playing a prank, then they are actually being sent from somewhere else, but with a fake return address (i.e. your friend's)...
