So Friday, I come home from school...everythings seems normal. I go downstairs to the fridge, were we keep the extra milk (I drink alot of it, about 5 or 6 gallons a week), and as soon as I get down there, I smelled something funny, like an electrical fire. Now, let me describe my basement (well, the unfinished part, anyway, where the fridge is)...all the electrical wiring comes down there, and the wiring is just plain crap. It's old, and really shoddy; we're constantly having problems with it. In addition, the furnace is down there, as well as the washer and dryer, and again the fridge, which is really old (was there when we moved in, the people who sold us the house couldn't fit it through the door). So anyway...I smell something burning. In addition, I look around and see cloudy-ness (smoke) in the basement. So at this point I'm scared out of my freaking mind. I run upstairs, grab the phone, and leave the house. I called my mom, then 911, then went to get my cat out of the house (she was right at the door).
The fire department came (they sent two engines, and one of those cars that the chief or asst. cheif or whatever rides in...it was overkill by alot). As it turns out, something with the refridgerator was shorting out...the fridge was plugged into a piece of crap extension cord...they weren't sure if it was the fridge, extension cord, or the outlet, but they said that something was shorting out. They turned off the circuit that its on (which my room is also on), and we've been waiting for an electrician to come since then. It really reminded me that everything you have can be destroyed in only a moment.....

Oh yeah, my friends and I joke around about our escapades with electricity, but it's something to be taken serious all the time. Good call on your part to have enough sense to call 911 though, some people would have thought nothing of it and went back about their business...

I would of been hauling my computer stuff outside if that were happening here
But yeah, I know what you mean. I really wish I had more space for my stuff so wiring would be easier... Loosing everything of mine in a fire is one of my biggest fears...

You mean almost tragedy? Anyway, good thing it was nothing more. How long did it take for the fire department to get there?

A few minutes..5-7 probably...they were pretty quick. They also didn't stick around too long...once they figured out something was shorting they backed those trucks out and left...bigger and better fires, I guess.
