Default headphone socket on dvd drive

This may a real stupid arse question but here goes...

The stupid headphone socket on the front of my dvd drive never has sound coming through it. Is there a way to set it up or something? I have the sound lead going from the back of the dvd drive to the sound card and its all plugged in properly. Ive tried playing dvds, cds, media from my computer, taking out the speakers from the back socket and still nowt. The only time i can get my headphones to work is through the speaker slot at the back of my computer on the soundcard which is a real pain as i have to drag the thing out everytime i want to put my headphones in. Is this headphone slot just there for the sake of it or can u actually get sound out of it?
