I have recently built a new computer. I installed Windows XP SP2, and I have all the drivers installed. When I am browsing the internet after about 5-10 minutes, the BSOD flashes for a split second and then the computer restarts. This usually happens when I am using the internet, but after a few times of restarting, it begins to restart a few minutes after it loads back up again. I changed the settings so it does not automatically restart when the error occurs, and I was able to copy down what the BSOD displays:

A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in the stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for driver updates. Try changing video adapters.

Check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then select Safe Mode.

I have checked the RAM and hard drive, and they are both fine. I have tried researching the problem to find a solution, but I have been unsuccessful.

Another problem I have recently encountered is when Windows Update tries to install updates, it says it can not successfully install the updates. The two updates it is trying to install are Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1 and Update for Windows XP (KB898461). I was wondering if this were related to the main problem.

Ok, You say you have checked your ram.

The first thing i would do, Is Remove ram, blow off all dust, Re-Seat.

Move onto Hdd, Unplug, Replug.

Move to GPU. Same thing as ram, Blow off, Re-seat.

Check all your fans are blowing correctly for Optimum airflow.

Check as much dust as possible is gone,

I would consider removing CPU and Re-Seating that as well.

It sounds like a HardWare related problem...

What are the chances of you wanting to Re-Format your computer?

everything is brand new so there is really no dust in the system...i have already reformatted once before, but i do not have a problem with doing it again...i just didn't want to ruin the components by reformatting over and over...i will check all the connections before i resort to reformatting again...any other ideas? thanks!

Reformatting Does not damage the components. AT ALL.

All i can think of is Reformatting, and starting anew.

Aah I experienced this once. It was IDE cable which was abnormal. I changed the cable and it works well. You should know that not all new things are in good condition. That's why they provide guarantee for problems in a certain period. Check your cables and hardwares tho they are brand new.

I had a problem like this, remove ALL traces of any video card drivers, then put the ones that came on the CD with your card on.
