Default GPS or GIS for iPaq

We just got some older iPaqs that were used for GPS or GIS work but have nothing related on them now. The previous owner is hard to get hold of (rarely in, doesn't answer email or phone messages much) so I thought I'd ask you:

What do we need (software, extra hardware, whatever) to get some sort of GPS or GIS system on these iPaqs?

This is for a community college and, this being summer, the relevant instructors are also hard to get ahold of!

TIA,
Jerry
