yeah but windows remote desktop requires the user logged onto the client machine to be logged off. This is no good for his requirments (thats not a dig at the idea though)

eh? There are two bits of hardware - your pc and the one your connecting two. Why would you need anything else. Unless you want a hardware method because you cant access the client pc / or arn't given permission to access it, in which case i think you should ask permission.
