Default Local disk space

Hi all,

I'm having some trouble with my laptop's local disk (sry this probably isn't specific to laptops). I'm trying to clear it up and save some space.

The local (C disk registers 37GB total memory, with 1GB free, so that should be 36GB used memory. But I have scoured every folder in there (incuding hidden files)--Documents&Settings, Program Files, Windows, etc, and at most they add to 31GB. I'm wondering if anyone has any idea where that extra 5GB is, and is it important stuff that I shouldn't touch? Is this a usual thing?

Much appreciated

The disk has been formatted to FAT32 or NTFC which takes up space, and the os takes up space as well, there are a number of things on the HD which wont be in folders.

Windows is stealing all that, it uses around 5 gig if you have all the service packs on and if you bought the computer from dell or anyone else, the PACK it full with UNWANTED CRAP!

So that sounds about right

Yeah, but usually people are smart enough to use the "add/remove applications" tool

As for the situation, try the "Free up disk space" tool in the control panel (under System and Maintenance). If that hasn't been used in a while it can usually find a bunch of crap that you dont need.
