Default memory replacement

I have an emachines T6412. Today I got a great deal on PNY memory at a local store and made sure it was compatable with my machine. Originally I had 512 mb and bought two 1GB sticks to replace it with. I put it in the machine and the tabs locked it into place. When I tried to power up the machine, the power light came on but the machine wouldn't start. I did get the fan to start up once for just a quick second but then it shut off and didn't come back on. I took out one stick and tried to reboot. Still nothing. Then put the original 512 back in. Still nothing. The power light comes on and blinks but thats all I can get. Did I do something wrong? There are no wires loose anywhere. I have replaced memory before in a couple of other computers over the years without any issues. Should I just take the machine in to have it checked or is there something I might be able to do?
I sure would appreciated any advice. Like everyone else, we cannot do without the computer for very long. (And my daughter doesn't like me using this one... hers!) Thanks so much for any help.
