Default seting up RAID?

So i just received a Aurora m9700 for a graduation present. I love it, it is an awesome computer but i have my one complaint, the tiny 80gb hard drive =( I have 60gb of just music and video's, let alone the countless games and other programs. My one question is, could i buy another 80gb 5400 drive and put it in and set it up as raid? or would it be wise to just make it another storage drive? and how would i set RAID up?

I hope you dont mean a 5400RPM drive...

If you do, I would scrap it all together and buy two new 7200 drives and set them up in RAID0, or just get one 10K/7200 drive.

But to answer your question, you can do that, as long as the motherboard supports RAID.

you have to backup you data as well as you cant spread existing data on a hardware raid.
Plus i would just get 2 hdds and run them seperatly. Forget about the raid...it is far too overrated

Aye, although if you're paranoid about losing data you could implement RAID1, which means both drives mirror each other. However you need to erase everything.

yeah it does, i think i'm just going to get a larger backup drive and move my music and games there, and run all my code and work off of the main 80gb-er

and yes its a 5400rpm drive, the 7200rpm upgrade was way to expensive, i'm not spending 250+ for a 80gb notebook hdd.

ok so now that i know i wont be doing raid, anyone have a suggestion for a large notebook drive?

If it's SATA, then something like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136071

There is absolutely no reason you would need to run RAID, plus RAID 1 slows performance because both HDs are synchronized meaning that the system waits while both drives read/write at the same time. It would also make your laptop heat way up more than it needs to be probably. RAID 0 is worthless unless you do a RAID 0 + 1, and RAID 5 you need at least 4 HDs to properly set up, because running RAID 5 with our a spare drive is also dumb in my mind.

RAID also does not increase performance in gaming, in fact for what you probably use your system for you would notice nil performance increase.

RAID has a place in computers and it is very useful but only when properly implemented. End users don't need a RAID.
