Default Can't access slave

I added a Samsung HD from an old PC I used to have to my current PC. Both the master and the Samsung have their own copy of XP. The Samsung was auto detected with no problem. My setup is like this:

Primary Master – Western Digital
Primary Slave – Samsung
Secondary Master – CD Rom
Secondary Slave Drive off

My problem is when I try to access the Samsung, Windows displays a box asking me if I want to format the Samsung and won’t let me do anything else. I’ve never had any problem with the Samsung until now. Does anybody have any clue what I may have done wrong?

First you need a Welcome to the Computer Forum! Official Welcome Thread and a reminder to new members to review the Forum Rules

It most likely is a lack of Windows detection there. When Windows was installed on both drives where they both plugged in at the same time seeing a dual boot or were they isolated? One method for restoring a drive when Windows fails to see it correctly is to go into the device manager and look in the disk drives section for the second drive. Right click on it and choose the uninstall option followed by restarting the system. When newly detected upon reaching the desktop after let Windows install the drivers for it. See if this restores it in the MyComputer and Windows Explorer windows.

Does the Windows on the Western Digital have SP1, SP2, or no SP?

All of the XP installations were done at a local computer shop so I'm unable to answer those questions but I'll check out the drivers - thanks.

If you want to save files off of the Samsung you can now use it for a storage drive or dual boot situation with a reformat of the drive if you no plans of reusing it in the old system again. There are several data recovery programs as well as knowing someone with a live for cd type Linux distro for simply copying files off of it before seeing that done. Knowing the size and type of drive would help here. If sata then you would need drivers for XP.

Here’s what I did wrong. I misunderstood the jumper chart that the manufacturer printed on the back of the HD. Once I removed the jumper, the thing worked like new - thanks

There you needed to set it to cable select rather then the typical master/slave configuration. Depending on OSs installed I've run into having a need to have both of two drives set to CS if not just the second drive. You are also dealing with a make of drive other then the Big 3 for all these years namely WD, Seagate, and Maxtor.
