Default Reformatting a Laptop

I recently purchased a NW8240 laptop from a friend and wanted to reformat it to get rid of all of the junk he had on it for a nice fresh start. He had everything except for the Windows XP disc. I have the key, just not the disc. My brother said I might be able to do it all with the recovery disc that I got but I don't think I could. Is there any special way to reformat a laptop or am I just going to have to find somebody with the XP pro disc?
