Default Is too much memory a bad thing?

I have a Dell Latitude c640, and the specs say that the maximum amount of memory is 1GB. If i try to put more in than that what would happen?

alright, well i tried to put more in, and it recognized it, but it seems that the notebook freezes then, is that from the memory?

You motherboard can hold only 1GB if you go over I have no idea what happens (crashes/freezes ect ect)

The motherboard memory controller may not be able to utilize more than 1gb of RAM causing you these problems.
