Default Cooling fan cycles on and off constantly

My HP Pavilion a1340n cooling fan has started cycling on and off all the time. It will come on for about 10-15 seconds then off for about 45 seconds...then back on again....then off again. It sits on my desktop and has plenty of space around it for air flow. Could there be a "sensor" going bad or does it really need to be doing this? It even does it throughout the night when noone is using it.

Thanks

No noises from the fan? When did this start? I would try to get my hands on another fan (any 3 pin fan) and plug it in into its slot. If it spins normally then your fans dyin.

Actually, now I think I can still hear the fan when I thought it was off. It is very quite but I think it is running. So could this louder noise be another fan kicking on and off? It is much louder.

what kind of processor is it, some processors (like my pentium d) have fans that are automatically variable speed and therefor speed up and slow down based on need. Some don't support this, if your processor doesn't support this and the fan is speeding up and slowing down then it needs to be replaced.

It's a pentium 4. It did not do this when it was new. However it started about 3-4 months ago but now it does it more often. I don't think it is a variable speed fan. The sound that I am hearing is defintly a on and then off fan. I guess I need to take the shell off and watch and just see for myself what is going on.

I've never heard of that. Can you explain? I'll have to see if I can find any reference to that in my manual
