When looking at dvd burners, what does 16x16 mean?

I've never seen just 16x16, but I assume it's the read write speeds... This was more the case with older CD Burners, they'd say 8x4x32. That was the rating on my first one, 8 write, 4 re-write, 32 read. But with drives that read so much media anymore, they can't really do that...
