Question Acessing XP's "My Documents" in Vista

Hi all!

My question is really hard to say, but i will try my best to illustrate it, hope it is clear enough.

Facts
Old computer:
Windows XP Pro

New computer:
Windows Vista Home Basic

One day, my old computer died. So i went and bought myself a new computer with a new HD, which I installed it with Vista Home Basic. Since my old computer does not work, i removed the old HD (which has XP in it) and placed it in the new computer as a slave drive. Now that i am using the new computer, i wanted to bring out the documents, pictures and all the other files which i saved in "my documents" and "my pictures" from the OLD HD. When i tried to even view the files, windows vista says that i have no permission and i have to go to the security tab to do this and that. I, without any knowledge of vista, i tried many options like giving ownership etcetc. But all did not work. Moving them out to desktop and trying to open them, gives me the same result.
I tried searching the web, but many answers are either unclear or too complicated because of my lack of knowledge.
Is it possible to take them out? Can i get permission to view them?
The files are really important for me, please lead me a hand

Thanks in advance

you can also try to remove your new hd and set the old one as master. then win xp should boot up and you can back up your documents...
