I had / still have a similar problem too. If I use the ethernet cable, nothing, modem power light is on, but I can't connect the modem to broadband.
Plug the USB in, install the drivers, bingo! I'm a surfing.

My Rig
Processor - Dual Core Hamster, speed doubled by very fast hamster wheel.
Hard Drive - Three small shoe boxes, with interconnecting string
DVD Drive - Black and Decker cordless drill with a laser strapped to the end
Modem - Two yoghurt pots, connected to the phone line with 3 core electric cable and PTFE tape.
Monitor - Samsung 12" microwave, with timer and defrost setting for cold computer mornings.
Printer - A 15th century monk, with a quill no less.
