I have recently formatted my Acer TravelMate 3000 Series laptop and since doing so my DVD/CD-ROM drive doesn't seem to read any DVD's.
When I insert a DVD disc it makes a bit of noise and the green light at the front of the drive comes on and flashes a bit as I'd normally expect it to, however, that's it... nothing else happens after that. When I go into 'My Computer' the drive is still shown but when I double-click on it I'm just shown an empty DVD Drive folder. When I tested with DVD Films, Windows Media player displays a message saying no DVD decoder is installed. I tried installing a an nvidia DVD Decoder but it didn't help solve the problem. All CD's work perfectly fine. The model number is EOSD-0CL (External Slim Combo Drive) for your reference. Any ideas how I can solve this? Thanks in advance for anyone who can help me out. Put a bootable dvd, possibly your OS media you used, if it is a dvd.
set your bios to boot from the cd / dvd drive and restart. If the dvd starts to boot the drive is ok, if not the drive may be bad.

To try and play DVD's, the solution I recommend is Power DVD, but it costs, as does WinDVD. I suggest that you try VLC Media Player if you don't already have any of these. It will play the vast majority of files out there, and can be downloaded from here.
Download VLC Media Player from VideoLan

I have seen some burnt disks that certain drives didn't like. Might this be the case with yours, or are these commercial disks that can't be read?
