Default How-to make dedicated IRC server?

Hello! This looks like a great forum. Been a reader for awhile now and thought it was high time to join

My first question is probably noobish!

I would like to create a dedicated IRC server. I do not wish to use something like freenode.

What might be the basic hardware requirements? I intend for this to run 24/7 and do nothing more than function for IRC.

Can I use any IRC client software?

Anything I am missing?

What about security not only for my system from hackers -- but to the chat?

Thanks

Do this with a second hand computer with a connection to the internet. Yes, just use any IRC software, create a channel, and leave your PC on. Simple as that

i think he wants to have his own server, not a channel.

*You can have a server and then people connect this this server and join "channels" or "rooms" within this server.

*You can also have your own "channel" which is a "room" within someone else's server that you controle.

To get your own server, you could probably pay a companie to host one for you (best option) or you could do it yourself with an old computer and leave it running in the corner of your room 24/7 with server software on it. no idea what software to use though as i have never done it.

If you want a channel there are several ways. join a server and create a new room. rooms are controled by the first person who goes in to it, so if you leave your computer on 24/7 you will always be in controle of it.
some servers support things called "bots" which you controle and sit in rooms and reserve them for you. you can look more in to this but it veries with server to server
