XP and Vista internet troubles

My friend had problems with his internet applications, and I was glad that I only had XP. Well, now I have the same problems. The issue is this: the updaters, browsers, etc. don't detect the connection. The connection itself works, the problem is in the computer. Anyone know whats wrong?
(As I said, this is going on with a Windows XP and a Windows Vista. My friend switched to Ubuntu just after this started, and has no problems.)

I had the same problem, I am currently dual booting Vista and XP and when I installed XP my connection didn't work on the XP os. All I did was downloaded the new drivers for xp and al is well (for now)
