I need to change my IP address for security reasons.
Im on Vista, and my ISP is comcast. I beleive I have a static IP because whenever I go online it is the same. I need to know how to change my IP. I have 3 computers in my home and all share the same IP. Im using a linksys wireless router but all 3 computers are connected to it via ethernet cable. Will this work? http://www.ehow.com/how_2056398_chan...ows-vista.html Also will it screw up my connection to the internet and my other PC's? And how can I find my submet mask and default gateway? |

No need to double post. And no, that wont work, because that only changes the local IP, not your external IP. Because yours is a static IP the only way to change it is to call up your ISP and get them to change it for you.

The local IP is used if you have a network setup in your home or business. If you only have one PC then theres really no use for it.
The reason they have local IP's but only one external IP per modem is because if they assigned every PC it's own external IP, then we would have already run out of combinations.

Also, if I leave my router unplugged for a night, will any of my IP's change?
Another thing... Is it IMPOSSIBLE to change your External IP through your computer? Or only through your ISP... And if I change my Internal IP, will I still be able to access the internet? |

Yup, if Comcast changes your IP, then the external IP will be different on all the computers. It's actually the modem that gets assigned the IP, and all the computers on the network are connected to the modem.
If you leave your computer off at night it still wont change, as your current external IP is determined by Comcast, so no, it's impossible the change your IP from your end. I dont know how your LAN is setup, but you can change around the IP's all you want but it wont effect anything on the internet side.

Since there are more computers in the world than IP addresses there has been several technologies placed to work around this. Your ISP assigns you an IP, which we will refer to as your WAN IP. Your router uses a feature called NAT (network address translation) which for lack of a better term, basically bridges your private network (IP range 192.x.x.x typically) to your WAN IP. So therefore your local network will always have that private IP range because your router is acting as a DHCP server also.
As far as I know most of the time your IP from your ISP (your WAN IP) is dynamic, but sometimes they assign a block of IPs to your node you are on, which then when you lease for your IP expires you get the same IP over and over again. Call your ISP and figure that out. Resetting the modem sometimes can do this, and if not a tech support person can change it remotely. |

As i have stated in previous posts i work for comcast techincal support. Why might i ask do you want to change your ip? What security reasons? If its becuase of illegal downloads or something like that we will not change your ip. Also with most requests to change an ip you have to allow for a 24 hour period before it will take effect. Generally like tlarkin said we assign our ip's dynamically to our nodes and you will recieve the same one over and over after your lease expires. Also comcast will only do this one time for free just a heads up if you request it more then one time they will charge you a service fee. Also resetting the modem or powercycling it will not renew your ip or change it as its dynamically assigned and your lease would still require you to recieve the same one again.
