formating hdd

Ok, My old computer is a prebuilt emachines. the hdd on it has a hidden partition, for a restore CD that came with the computer, that somehow became corupted and lost some data, now the restore CD no longer works. What I want to do is complete format the hdd and install ubuntu linux. Basically, could someone walk me thorugh the steps needed to do this? what programs/disks do i need? what about drivers? thanks for the help

I can't tell you exactly what to do, but if you load a LiveCD I'm quite sure the install option asks about partitioning and formating the drive.

so if i have a liveCD of ubuntu it should have an option? wont i need a driver for my CD drive though?
