Default Looking for Alternative "hotmail->msn messenger" setup

Im looking for a program that will sit in my taskbar and keep me updated if any new emails show up in whatever free online email host i would use. I dont care about messenging and all that bullshit, i just want to get my emails out of M$ clutches.

thanks for the tip but im looking to get my emails out of the hands of big companies like M$, yahoo, and google. Is there a "mail notifier" for any host of my choosing? or even one for a smaller host?
