a pea sized or smaller amount spread out thinly on the cpu between the heatsink and cpu. You have less than a minute without it, for some cpu's
the heatsink (the big hunk of metal) wick's the heat away with the help of the paste

yes, you need to turn off your computer ASAP. take that heat sink off again then reapply that thermal compound. watch that you tube video to help you out.
thermal compound is very important for cooling!

the CPU transfers heat to the 'big block of metal'. you need to put a small amount of thermal paste on top of the CPU, then put the heatsink (big block of metal) back on.

Well my CPU appears to be running fine for 15+ mins...haven't really left my computer on any longer than that because you people are scaring me with it overheating or whatever. :p Wouldn't it automatically turn off anyway, to avoid hardware damage? I know my laptop does that..
On a side-note, it is only a 2.2ghz Intel Celeron with a 400w power supply. You could really only hope for it to blow up. :p

Ahh, i haven read the full thread. BUT
AMD will keep going till it kills itself (happened too me dammit) Intel will actually "Clock Down" to avoid Damage to itself FYI: Clock Down = CPU Lowers the speed its running at for the amount of time till it cools back down to avoid creating more heat thus burning itself out Correct me if im wrong, But AMD has fixed this problem?
