"A barebone computer is a half-assembled platform that consists of a case with a power supply, a motherboard preinstalled into the system case, and a cooling system." - From wikipedia

Not ALWAYS the case...

A lot of times when you buy barebone, I believe the components come packed separately. I think the only things that HAVE to be included in a barebone is the motherboard and the case, but often you will see ones with PSUs, RAM, CPU or other components.

I did wonder why there was a barebone system on a website I purchase from going for £80 when Wikipedia states that you get all of that included. I never actually knew the definition for that myself hence why I wiki'd it.

Also, a barebone kinda differs depending on who you buy it from. On Newegg, a barebone is often a smaller case with a smaller motherboard fitted for the case, PSU, and sometimes CPU. On TigerDirect, a barebone is often just a bunch of parts bundled together for cheaper.
