Can you verify that your headphones work on another device?

Sound card problem? Try different headphones with the computer.

There's basically a switch in the jack that turns the speakers on and off... Perhaps that broke and now it's stuck on just speakers? I've seen the opposite happen...

You could also double check any soundcard settings you may have if you have speical software. Be sure the port's not in some weird mode as they sometimes do many different things(say for surround sound)

I had turned on my laptop the other day and the sound worked through headphones no problem, now it's not working again. The sound comes out through the laptops speakers but won't come out through the headphones. I had checked the settings and restarted the laptop a couple times ad it still won't work now. I've tried using my headphones on my friends MP player and they work good but not using the laptop. This laptop is only a few months old.
