I currently run Vista Home Basic (32bit) and need to upgrade to a new router, since my current router (WGR614v5 NetGear) decreases download speeds and increases ping.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Ummm I do not think the router cares what OS you use. All the router sees is data packets, that is why you can network different OS.
Go to newegg.com and have a look around.

Apparently it does matter, I get far superior download speeds (1-50KB/s with the router, 700KB/s+ without it) and far better ping times (350ms+ with the router, 40 or less without it). I own two of the same router, and both behave exactly the same when installed on my network.

Aside from that, it's been brought to my attention many times (by others, and by researching) that Vista has compatibility issues with quite a few routers in regards to how it sends and recieves the data you speak of.

I'm still on the hunt for a new router, and currently newegg is my second choice.. but I will be searching there once I get a few good suggestions.

What I'm looking for are suggestions on routers that someone has successfully used with Vista without connectivity issues.

I duno, i have vista ultimate and it works fine with my FIOS router and my D-LINK DI 624. I checked some data sheets for routers online and they usually say something like "...win 98, me 2000, xp, linux or any tcp/ip based OS"
So I do not know what to tell you.
If there is an issue with Vista and broadband routers I have not experienced it. If there is an issue I can only imagine that it is with Vista configuration and not not the router.
BTW what routers do you have ?

I have some random Linksys router my friend didn't want and gave me. It had old as firmware one it and it worked fine with Vista. The firmware was a bit unstable, naturally I updated. Works fine.

..i think there is something wrong with your tcp ip stack or the routers you are using
i know that is not what you want to here so i will drop out of this and let ppl make suggestions on new routers

I have 2 (using one at a time) NetGear WGR614v5, both behave the same when connected.

As for an issue with Vista and routers, I'm reading everywhere (Microsoft namely, but alot of googling as well) that there are only a select few that are 100% compatible with Vista's newest networking features, and mine aren't on the list. The WGR614v8 is, and according to NetGear the WGR614v6 and WGR614v7 have 'beta drivers' available, but the firmware for those will not work with my v5.

Reference - Compatible routers list @ Microsoft - Must have IE6 or newer to view - (I don't expect many to have IE, but in case you do check it out).

(NOTE: I use Opera.)


I'm up for anything that might salvage at least one of my current routers.

If my TCP IP Stack were bad, would I still be able to get the 700KB/s download speed when connected directly to the modem? ..but be limited to 50KB/s or less with an extremely high ping when connected through the router?

Also, I currently have 3 computers, two wired in to the router and the one running XP Home SP2 gets a nice, stable connection and download speeds are pretty good as well, around the same as when I'm wired directly to the modem with my Vista box, and the ping is low on the XP machine as well.. I've tried swapping ports on the router but that yeilded the same results.

If nothing else, maybe you might know how to successfully run ICS with a Vista host and XP Client?

I actually tried using a crossover cable instead of the standard cat5 cable (I'm used to the Xbox 360 over ICS, it never needed a crossover cable) and it worked almost instantly after checking the tab to 'share my internet connection'.


I'm still extremely interested in a reply to my above questions, though.. please get back to me when you get a chance Viking =)

Is it because you are using IPv6 ?
See if you can remove IPv6 and go back to Ipv5

click start
click run
type ncpa.cpl
hit enter
highlight your network connection
right click, then properties
see if you have ipv6, try to use "install" to get ipv5, remove ipv6

do not use the crossover cable, will not work with a router

I'm not using the router anymore, I'm connected through ICS.

Now my problem is that Opera (IE does the same thing) pulls up " Remote server could not be located " almost everytime I try going to a site, however, refreshing the page brings up the website almost instantly.

Yes, I'm using IPv6.
