Default Question about LCD and GPU resolutions

So, I'm putting together a pretty monster rig for HD entertainment and gaming. I'm going with a EVGA 780i mobo, q6600 quadcore, PALiT 8800GTS g92 1gig, and 2 gigs of ddr2 1200. My question is about LCD monitors/size and resolution and how they effect the GPU resolutions and quality.

I'm pretty out of the loop as far as where to put my settings for games, considering I haven't had a PC that can run anything modern for ages. I'm still in 1024 x 780.

The range LCD I am looking at is the Samsung 24" to 22". the 22" native rez is 1680 x 1050, while the 24" native is 1920 x 1200. My question is how much better is the quality between these two resolutions. And secondly, when choosing game video settings, do I try and match them as closely to the native resoultions as I can?

Thanks for the help.
