I tried to avoid conducting static electricity while building my computer so I wore latex gloves the entire time, a friend of mine says that that won't help stop static but I think I did work in a somewhat grounded area but I just want to know if the latex gloves worked or not to prevent static.

I would think Latex gloves would be much worse than just touching your case chassis first, then using your hands. Ever rub to balloons together then touch the balloons to your hair? What happened? Now, instead of balloons, you are rubbing two rubber gloves together.

im not positive but i believe that the gloves would magnify your problems. i have built many many computers and the big thing is dont have it or you on carpet or anything like that and you should be okay, and just touch something that will ground you before you start. and as far as static charges go, your ram will be the big concern there.
