Yes, lightscribe requires a special optical drive, printable CD's and DVD's require a special printer. The biggest detraction to LS is that it takes quite a while to print the image (15 - 30 minutes depending on the image and drive) to print. However the quality is quite nice. The price for LS is slightly lower than printable CD's and DVD's, I believe, but that's negligable.
