Default does this matter much

I have 2G (1x2 sticks) of Patriot extreme performance ram. I'm using 32 bit vista. For when i need more ram, should i....

1. Get and 2g, but only really use 3.5g?
2. Get a 1 gig stick, and go up to 3g?
3 Get 2x512mb stick and go up to 3g?

As well, can you mix up ram on the MB? like i already have 2g dual channel, can the other 2 slots be used with different ram? would it effect ocing much?

I would get the 3.5GB because
you can mix RAM but it would set to the lowest speed.
So you would get 2GB with 2x1gb and 2x512MB.
Im not sure if using only 3 sticks will make you loose dual channel
so I would go for the 3.5GB.
BUT at the same time I trust thatguy16's judgment
Good luck!

why only really use 3.5gb? Vista will support over that mark so if you were to get another 2X1gig sticks then you will have 4gb memory. So the setup is 4X1gb all in dual channel......

no matter what don't just get 1x1gb or 1x2gb make sure you can set it up as dual channel i'd go 2x1gb if you do a lot with your machine because you need a good chunk of memory for vista
