Default Is my sound problem unsolvable? Want a challenge?

I just can't seem to get anyone to help me with my problem. It's kind of odd. Heres some background. I purchased a Dell E510 about 2 years ago. It's a decent setup I suppose. However, I had a sound problem from day 1. I load up my flight sim (MS FS 2004) and when I increase throttle on the planes, the sound pitch doesn't go up smoothly. It goes up in increments, like if you were playing a scale on a musical instrument. I can solve that issue by turning the hardware aceleration all the way down. This makes the sound increase smoothly now. Only problem is now the sound quality sucks. I would like to have the sound increase smoothly and be good quality with full hardware aceleration. What should I do? I'm not the best with computers, so I'll need some detailed instructions if anyone has a solution. The soundcard that came with this is an onboard SigmaTel something or other. SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC is what it says under system information.
