the 7800, 7900 and i think the ati's above a x1600? are all better than the 8600gt. im not so sure about the ati cards, dont know them to well, but in all benchmark and tests the 7800 and 7900 cards perform better. And they are about the same price if not cheaper

if this is your graphics card, the scores are very reasonable. it is running at 540mhz, which is pretty slow without any overclock. Mine ran 5750 with cpu score of 2485 and video card scores were 2400/2100 while the memory speed was overclocked to 711mhz (it was stock 620mhz). Also you have to put in the fact that vista takes away some performance on 3dmark06 tests. So far, your system is perfectly fine.

I run a Core 2 duo e6550 2.3 @ 2.6, 2 gigs of pc4200 memory in dual channel, an MSI P6NSLI motherboard, 550 watt psu, and 1 8600 gt XXX edition 256mb 620mhz clock. I scored a 5160. He's running a quad core and got a lower score and from what it looks like hes got two video cards, but it isn't running in sli mode? He's also running dx10 where I am running 9.0c, because I'm using xp. Mayhaps me running xp gave me a boost in scores, but it looks like his should have scored at or above mine considering he is running a quad core. Am I wrong?

He isn't using two GPU's the second one is the drivers... I would put it down to Vista, but that's just my opinion. I think the 8600 is a good card, it should be able to play most games on high settings, have you tried playing any games or just benchmarking?
