DVD drive disappeared......

I have a Dell E521 only 6 months old, I upgraded to vista but didn't like it so I reinstalled XP and now my DVD drive will not work, it doesn't show up in My Computer, but it says that it's operating correctly in Device Manager. I have unistalled it and also tried to update the drivers but with no luck. Any Suggestions.

When you reinstalled, was the PC in safe mode?

Edit: Roll back the update and then reinstall

No i wasn't in safe mode. I tried to rollback the driver but it said i had nothing to roll back to. Every other device operates fine.

I found the problem, my old burning software left some things in the registry when i uninstalled, once i removed those entries my dvd drive appeared.
