PSU to mobo connection cables question(s)

I went in my case to see about swapping a stick of RAM for another, and noticed that there is a 4 prong/pin cable dangling in my case, from the PSU, and there's a slot that it fits perfect in next to the main power dongle from the PSU on the mobo.. there's even a little raised edge on the main dongle to sit over this 4 prong/pin cable.. but for some reason it wasn't plugged in.

Does anyone know what this 4 prong/pin dongle might be for? My computer runs fine with it unplugged.. but it seems like it should be plugged in there.

This is a pre-built PC, so I wonder if someone overlooked it when they built it?

Various board might either use a 20 pin power socket or a 24 pin power socket. By having a detachable 4 pin section to the plug it enables PSU manufacturers to just make one plug for each PSU rather than wasting money on 2 plugs.

If you have had no problems then might has well leave it in my book, if it aint broke and all that jazz

I've had random freezes.. nothing to reboot over, goes away if you leave it alone for awhile most times.

Everything seems to work, though.

Why does my board have the input, though? Shouldn't that be plugged in if the board supports it?

If its got a 24 pin power connector and the board has a 24 pin, use all 24.

aye if you have actually experienced some problems then plug it in, theres a chance it was just missed on its initial installation.

I plugged it back in a few minutes ago without ill effect so far.

I wonder what it's for since the computer works without it
