Default USB Ports not working! Tried everything! :O

ooookay, heres the deelio. im trying to get my friend's computer's USB ports working so he can use his Zen Vision M. The comps running on Windows XP Pro SP2.
I've tried alot in Device Manager. Installed the drivers that came with the Zen, and even made sure they're enabled in the computer start up setup. I think i've even tried stuff i can't remember doing....XP
Oh and the comp is a IBM model 818938U KCAP9Z8.

I dont have much time at his house, im just visiting from another state, so help wanted asap. THANKS!

ooooh yea, he also added more USB ports so now there are 6 USB ports and none work.

im gonna open the comp and take a look soon.

i'v seen one of those links. i really dont know wats wrong with the ports. this is the weirdest thing about it. they work for my mp3 player(totally different kind) ONLY if its plugged into the comp, and i restart the computer. then it works. but if i unplug my mp3 player, and plug it back it, it doesnt work anymore...XP

Are you talking about PCI USB cards, the USB ports in the rear, or the USB you connect to your case? If integrated onto motherboard, you may need to install drivers.

I have seen this happen a few time where the USB ports work for one ext hard drive but not another
to fix you need to
Remove the USB drivers in device manager and reboot , windows will reinstall and you should be good.
