Default problem with external hard drive req. formatting

My mom has 2 external hard drives for work, and 2 months ago took one of them to an employees house to store it for awhile. She just got it back and tried to use it, but it says it must be formatted. Supposedly it was never touched once the employee put it in a closet. We are trying to figure out what could have caused this problem. If you have any idea on what could have caused it, or a way to recover the data, please help.

The second hard drive and her main computer are still functioning and no important data has been lost, but there are older backups that she would prefer to have.

Default

the first hard drive : probably corrupted partition, happens sometimes, you can get your data back, just google for "data recovery"
