Default sony vaio freezing when in sleep mode

my bro just bought a Sony Vaio desktop pc [$1700] and whenever the pc goes in sleep mode, it freezes. Right now he has sleep mode shut off b/c of it.

anyone know what the heck it could be?

There was a Microsoft update to fix this i think...something about system crash after Power Save mode
