What's the advantages or purposes of owner your own private server?

you get to set it up however you want...but then again, like everyone else already asked, what type of server/for what purpose are you asking...that helps answer your ???

well, there are lots of advantages, and disadvantages. depeding on what you want to use it for, you can host a website, a game server, a media server, and 1000 other things...all for free! like the first reply said, it depends on what you want to use it for. the disadvantages are that you have to maintain everything yourself. samba for linux can be quite tricky, even for high level users, but other apps like FTP are quite simple. basically, if your upload speed on your ISP is high enough, your own personal server has endless possiblities.
