Default Will it be a waste of money

if I were to buy a radeon HD2900/geforce 8800gts and use it on windows xp home/pro?

I wanted a high performance graphic card but no windows vista as there are many hardware/software compatibility issues(many of my friends switched back to xp as their printer/scanner does not work on vista) as well as the amount of lag as compared to xp.

Will there be any conflict or problem if I use 2900/8800 with xp and will there be any game compatibility issues as well?

Many thanks and hope this helps me.

But I am aware that vista supports dx10 but not xp.
Does it means that I will not be able to play certain dx10 games or in fact all?

no, you will be able to play them, just without things like HDR and things like that. i dont like HDR anyways because, as seen in the game bioshock, HDR makes water look washed out and overbrightens things, in the hope of making them more realistic. frankly, some people like it, i dont

Oh I feel great to hear that. Anyway what is the HDR? As well as many other terms like AA etc? I am a noob at those.
For your info, I am getting the 2900 for speed, enhancement and for it being a new built. Am I going into the right way to spend my money?

HDR- High dynamic Range
An arguably realistic (or funny) way of portraying light Ala,

AA- Anti aliasing
Removes the stair step, or jaggies, from straight or curved lines.

AS- Anisotropic filtering
Improves the detail of objects far away

Waste, IMO, look at banchmarks, the 8800 gts superclocked get the same amount of FPS than the 2900Xt, but u'll pay around 100$ less, but if u are looking for big resolution or HD TV, i'd go with the ATI, for gaming, nVidia FTW!!

HDR isnt a DX10 feature, so you can still use that on XP.

Those cards are great cards, even under XP, since they will play DX9 games very good.
