Default Laptop takes 7-8 minutes to fully boot. Anything??

Hi, Great forums! From the time I turn on my laptop until the time I am able to successfully open a browser is about 7-8 minutes. The machine just keeps grumbling and grumbling (which I think means it's copying stuff) This is much longer than it takes for my work computer to boot.

Is there anything I can do to make it boot faster? Delete programs maybe??

The machine is a Fujitsu LifeBook C Series (bought in 2004), which is a fairly powerful desktop replacement type of laptop.

Thanks a lot.

delete some unuseful programs, defrag your hard drive, and upgrade your ram.

having more ram will cut the boot time in half give or take.

Welcome to computer forum

have a feeling it is a faulty process. hit ctrl+alt+delete. hit processes and click the cpu tab. post with any thing that says 60-100 in there. it should be the top one.

I have Webroot Spy Sweeper (which is a great program but it does slow things down as it is constantly updating) I also have Norton AV which always has something going on as well I believe with auto-protect on. I'm going to clear out my desktop as I have a bunch of programs sitting there which I don't use.

-Type "msconfig" without the quotes at the run command, and in the startup tab entries uncheck unnecessary apps that startup with windows. ('Unnecessary' would be defined by what you personally don't use/require)

-Also under [Administrative tools] ->[services] disable unnecessary services that startup automatically. A lot of the services are simply not required and can add to the startup time. They can be set to disabled or manual. The Eldergeeks site has a great guide to managing XP services. Read that before you disable services that may be essential.

-Disable spyware/anti-virus scans that scan/update immediately after logging on to windows (personal preference really, some people like it, I hate anything scanning or updating as soon as I logon to windows)

-Do a disk cleanup with the inbuilt windows tool or better yet, Ccleaner, a free utility.

-Defrag the drive. I'd recommend Diskeeper pro. It's not free, but you can get free trial versions at the diskeeper website. After you defrag, also schedule a boot-time defrag with Diskeeper and it will defrag the MFT, paging file etc. This should help speed up the boot times.

[I've heard of some conflict between Norton and Diskeeper, so you may want to confirm this before you install.]

Hopefully this will speed up the notebook a bit.

Hi there,

Indeed a great forum Could you send a Hjt-log so I can see what programs you have and what are useless so we can remove them. And we can also save some time by deactivating some programs during the boot process.
