E8400 might be better at stock speeds but if you clock a Q6600 G0 to 3Ghz it won't do much worse (maybe even better). If you clock it to 3.2 (which is easy) you'll get a great gamer out of your Q6600 and a great editing CPU.

Also, I'd suggest you get the cheapest 8800GT you can get and slap on a Arctic Accelero S1 Rev2 (look up the reviews) and perhaps a turbo module if your airflow is not that well. The Accelero costs like 25 dollars and it outperforms practically every stock cooler (especially if you compare the sound... Seeing the Accelero doesn't make any). And you can always slap on one or two casefans if you want even better performance.

OCZ StealthXStream 600Watt is also not expensive.


(PS, you have multiple types of Accelero's. I believe the Accelero S2 is for most ATI cards.)
