Computer wont turn on

Hey guys. My brothers computer wont turn on. I know its getting power because the power indicator light on the motherboard is lit. Basically whats happening is when I press the power on button on the front of the computer it doesn't power on. I only have 2 leads that I am going to try when I get home from work which are: A) the power button is broke and needs to be switched with the reset button or B) The big cable from the power supply to the Motherboard isn't clicked on. The weird part is that the computer was on, and my brother shut it off and then it hasn't come back on since. As far as I know, nobody has been inside messing with anything. If you guys have any leads for me to try please let me know, as I am somehow responsible for fixing it. Thanks

Few possibilities:

1. PSU is struggling to supply enough juice to boot
2. Dead CPU
3. Dead memory module(s) or need reseating
4. Dead CMOS battery
5. CPU fan failed which prevents system to boot

A dead CMOS battery will not stop your system from booting. All the battery does is keep power to your BIOS settings, so that you do not loose the current date and time,resource assignment for Plug and Play systems and other certain settings. If it is dead you would just have to reset your bios settings every time you booted.

If the battery were dead you would get a beep from the motherboard telling you it was dead.

Otherwise I agree with everything else Crimsonite said.

But most likely it's the ram, either 1 stick is bad, or both. Try removing 1 stick and rebooting, if that don't work replace it and remove the other one. Making sure that there is always 1 stick in the first slot.

1. Then it would start, immiediately shutdown, or not display anything at all
2. You can still turn on with an dead CPU or no cpu at all.
3. No memory or faulty memory will turn on. Reseating does nothing
4. CMOS batteries wont do anything when dead, just reset CMOS back to default
5. It will not affect it not turning on...

I suggest that the PSU is dead. Or the switch is not connected properly, motherboard is fried.

try reseting the cmos. so take the butten battery out and power everythign off. wait 1 min and put it back in. plug it back up and try again. also there may be a jummper that says like coms or something. put the jumper on the other side. press the power button and put the jumper back and turn on

what board does he have, if he has a evga 680i, when i have a 4pin molex connected to the motherboard it starts and shuts off instintly

He has an ASUS board. Its not shutting off immediately, it was working fine, then he powered it down and it wont turn back on. I'm gonna try replacing the PSU and hopefully that will fix it. Thanks for your help guys, if you have anymore suggestions feel free to post them here.

This is 99% the PSU. Exact same thing happened to me - - comp turned off, wouldnt turn on and then i figured it would be the PSU, and it was.

Check your PSU, is yours a cheap one?
