Hey Man!

Well, for Rock and such, Like Matt said, humbuckers are a must!

Which means that, the majority of Strat Style guitars are out, as they use mainly single coil pick-ups... Which won't produce the heavy sound you're after.

Something like this would be good, for a first electric... It may not be the best sounding guitar, but it'll sure do it's job!

As for Amps, I have a Fender Frontman 15G, It's only 15watt, but I've never had occasion to play it on anything above 7!
