Default OS Failure

My moms laptop crashed and the OS I guess got messed up, so I installed Kubuntu on it, and I was told I could access the files on the Windows OS, which was the one that crashed.

So. Let me know, please.

Thanks.

Installing a Linux distro wasn't the answer like running a live for cd distro like Knoppix or ubuntu to access a stubborn partition. You simply boot from live cd to rescue files when you can't gain access by way of MS. You would simply slave the drive in another case or put a second one in and boot with a live distro to see those drives as desktop icons ready for browsing and copying from. A good article on this using Knoppix can be reviewed at http://greenfly.org/talks/knoppix/rescue.html
